"WINDSWEPT" (THE BIG HOUSE)

"Windswept Shimmo" is the name of our family compound located in Shimmo, a community overlooking the harbor across from the town of Nantucket. The Big House has a truly sweeping view (for quicktime video, virtual reality panoramic view click here - 2.6MB) of Nantucket town, the harbor, Brant Point, the jetties and Coatue. From the second floor deck and widow's walk you can see and hear the birds of the island, including northern harriers, ospreys and cedar wax wings. Our two acre meadow, which was cultivated in 2001 and seeded with native grasses and wild flowers, has a path that leads to a dirt road in Monomoy that goes directly to Shimmo beach a harbor beach.

Enter Windswept through the front entrance into the large Family Room which has a very comfy seating area centered on a large brick fireplace. The Family Room has a T.V. with a VCR, DVD, one closet full of board games, lawn toys and kites and another closet with foul weather gear, coolers, a high chair and a card table. There are also shelves filled with videos, paperback books and historical and nautical books about Nantucket.

The eat-in Kitchen is next to the family room and is totally equipped with a microwave oven, a toaster, a coffee machine, an ice maker and a dishwasher. There is china service for twenty (non-breakable for children) as well as other essentials such as lobster pots and vases. The closet houses a washer, dryer, iron and ironing board. A large deck with tables, cushioned chairs and an outdoor grill catches the morning sun and is off the kitchen and family room.

There are also 2 bedrooms on Windswept's first floor. Down a photograph-filled hallway is the "Red, White and Blue King Bedroom" (first decorated in honor of the 1976 Bicentenial). This bedroom has a king size bed, a sitting area with a picture window and a fabulous bath with a walk in shower and soaking tub. There is another full bath off the hall and a bedroom with 2 twin beds at the end of the hall.

Windswept's second floor has 2 more bedrooms and a full bath. The kids' room has 2 twin beds, a cot and a crib, a play kitchen, toys and books. The master bedroom (photo at left) has a king size bed and a sitting area that opens to a second floor deck with breathtaking views of Nantucket harbor and town! This room is decorated in soft beiges and shells and has a bookcase full of trashy novels and self-help books.

Windswept's west wing is off the Family Room on the first floor and includes the Dining Area and Formal Living Room. Stepping down into the dining area you will notice the large pine trestle table that seats at least 14 and the gorgeous bay window. This is the spot to enjoy wonderful lingering meals watching the bright red skies of a Nantucket sunset!

Stepping down again, you come to the more Formal Living Room which has a stereo, wet bar and many notable nautical antiques including a ships figure head on the wall.There are sliding glass doors that open on to the front lawn. Adjoining this living room is another king size bedroom and full bathroom.

POOL AND TENNIS COURT

In the back of the Big House, past the swing set, scrub oaks and flowering plants is the place to hang out -the "Whimming Pool" (pictured at right) and its brick patio, lounge chairs and pool house with changing rooms, bathroom and outdoor shower. A path leads from the pool area to the All-Weather Tennis Court, known,of course, as "Whimbledon" and its patio and seating area.

WHIM OR "GRANDMA'S COTTAGE"

Another pathway takes you back to our clamshelled circular driveway and "Grandma's Cottage" (with the quarterboard "Whim") straight ahead. This is a cute, compact little house comfortable for up to 6 people.

The 1st floor has a Living Room (pictured at right) with fireplace, T.V., VCR, DVD, a small, well-equipped kitchen, a dining area, a full bath and a large master bedroom with king size bed. One of its closets stores a crib and a high chair. Outside the sliding glass doors is a deck with furniture.

The 2nd floor has one large, sky lit room with 3 built in twin beds and a cot, decorated in brightly colored fish quilts with toys and books on shelves and in cupboards.

Windswept Shimmo holds so many memories for our family, lots of new babies by birth and adoption, tons of family reunions and the last sweet times with Grandma and Granddad.
